With the month of August comes some of the hottest temperatures of the year in the Nashville area. In addition, your clients are busy all month long trying to squeeze in that last family vacation before school starts, going swimming at the pool, and driving kids all over town. With all these distractions, it is easy for your them to forget about preparing their homes during hotter temperatures. Be “cool” and share these simple home heat mitigation tips with your clients making it easy for them to fully enjoy the last days of summer.
- Check the insulation: Insulation is a building material that is used to help stabilize internal temperatures of a structure like a home or office building. Up-to-date insulation will keep cool air in and hot air out, even in the heat of summer. Furthermore, checking insulation will give your clients the chance to look for any damage to their existing insulation, such as water damage, which could have an effect on the overall quality of the material.
- Clean the air conditioner: In many cases, homeowners will call a professional to check over their air conditioner at the beginning of the summer. However, maintaining a clean air conditioner year round will prevent it from going out or causing bigger problems. Encourage property owners to turn off their unit,  then change out filters, remove leaves and sticks, and hose off any debris that has accumulated.
- Keep electricity off or unplugged when not in use: Lights, computers, and even television sets often produce heat that can build up in a room. It’s a good idea to keep these items turned off or unplugged if they are not being used. Doing so can help with the electricity bill, and lower the temperature of a room.
- Use fans: Many homeowners have an air conditioner, but it isn’t always absolutely necessary. Opening doors and windows can help keep a home cool on moderate days. A floor fan can also help circulate the air in their home. Even if a homeowner has an air conditioning unit, a fan may still help cut down on energy costs this August.
